Step on a thick but soft cardboard box. The board is heavy and plush rather than rigid — the foot sinks in gently with no hard impact, no knock or slam, just a deep, muffled, padded squash as the thick paper layers compress and fold softly inward. The sound is absorbed and dull, warm and heavy, ending with a faint, slow rustle of the cardboard springing back.
